Online applications and ‘easy apply’ functionality makes applying for roles easier than ever, but is that really a good thing? Applicants might think they have nothing to lose by applying to anything and everything with the same generic resume….but this is a lazy approach and is easily spotted by the hiring manager. It’s a one-way ticket to the ‘rejected’ pile.
Firstly, take the time to think about the type of role you are looking for. If you are looking to change careers or move into a new industry, do some research, look at the qualifications you might need to acquire, and plan your move. You can aim high but be prepared to take the necessary steps and invest in your career before you ask an employer to take a leap of faith. You might want to be a doctor, but you wouldn’t apply for the position without going through medical school.
It is advised to tailor your resume and covering letter to every application to ensure you highlight your relevant skills and experience for that role. Research the company and assess whether this is the right cultural fit for you and your career. Only apply for roles that you really want and believe you can do well, this passion and confidence should come across in the interview.
In short, don’t waste your time mass-applying for every job you come across. Focus your attention on the right roles for you.
